As one of the first books published in the UK to comprehensively show how comics can be used in educational settings, it draws on a growing body of evidence to demonstrate how comics can transform learning experiences, enhance engagement, and support key educational outcomes. The book begins with an exploration of the history and rationale for using comics in education, before delving into their role in fostering reading for pleasure, visual literacy, and oracy. It also examines how comics can inspire creative writing and drawing, serve as tools for critical thinking, and be integrated across the curriculum. Later chapters address important topics such as representation, accessibility, diversity, and the potential of comics in sustainable education. Each chapter combines research insights, real-world case studies, and practical activities, equipping educators with the tools to overcome challenges and start using comics effectively. Many public and private educational systems, community organizations, and higher education institutions embrace SEL practices in various forms, such as wellness conversations, mindfulness interventions, trauma-informed practices, restorative circles, yoga, among many other interventions. Recent global events that our children, youth, and adults are experiencing, such as global pandemics, natural disasters, religious persecutions, forced migrations, social and political unrest, and violence, are reminding us of our interconnectedness as global citizens. At the same time, society and employers are now, more than ever, in desperate need of individuals who are emotionally intelligent (Harvard Business Review, 2015). While SEL is becoming increasing critical for learners’ success, teachers often feel unprepared to incorporate or address it in their classrooms. This book serves as a practical, concise, and easy-to-follow reference that English language teachers in K-12 and adult education and English language teacher educators can use in their classrooms. It is one of the limited emerging SEL resources available that is tailored to the English language teaching field and contributes to filling the existing gap of SEL in English language education. Teachers will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to practice self-care and be confident in implementing SEL in their learning spaces to support and benefit their learners.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_696cad44-e2bf-4802-8288-c83e1b8f000b.jpg?v=1788965523
using-home-language-as-a-resource-in-the-classroom-9781945351976
Using Home Language as a Resource in the Classroom
What can educators do right now, in their own classrooms, to support students of varied cultures and languages? Blending scholarly research, classroom strategy, and lived experience, it explores how trauma affects learning, behavior, relationships, and teacher well-being, as well as how schools can become places of safety and healing. Written by an educator, trauma scholar, and Gold Star widow, the book weaves compelling narrative with evidence-based practices, offering both insight and hope. The text is organized into three sections that move the reader from foundational understanding to practical application. Part I, Foundations of Trauma-Informed Understanding, examines what trauma is and how it impacts students’ brains, bodies, and behaviors. Part II, Shifting the Lens—From Behavior to Belonging, reframes misbehavior as a signal of underlying need, encouraging educators to seek root causes rather than punitive responses. Part III, Practices That Restore, presents strategies for creating trauma-informed classrooms that prioritize safety, connection, and empowerment.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_231b0971-9774-4aa2-8f3c-9bb92aad7e29.jpg?v=1788965525
the-multilingual-ela-classroom-9780814102817
The Multilingual ELA Classroom
Heritage language speakers, emergent bilinguals, simultaneous bilinguals—multilingual students are in nearly every classroom in the US and Canada. Yet how can ELA teachers do this successfully when they don't speak their students' languages? In this book, meet five ELA teachers in grades preK–12 who put literacy and language theory into practice in creative, innovative, and student-centered ways. Each chapter contains specific teaching ideas and projects implemented by these teachers to engage their linguistically diverse students in authentic meaning-making. As such, there is no shortage of insights or suggestions for how teachers might incorporate creativity into their curriculum. Wading through these suggestions can, however, be quite daunting. This is because many of these suggestions imply that teachers need to somehow radically change their approach to teaching, adopt a new curriculum, or add-on to their existing curriculum. Consequently, many teachers feel that such changes are not feasible and may even come at the cost of supporting students’ academic learning. This book provides an alternative. Teachers need not adopt a new curriculum, radically change what they are already doing, or attempt to add more to their already overflowing plate of curricular responsibilities. Rather, teaching for and with creativity is often more about doing what one is already doing, only slightly better. The aim of this book is to help teachers understand how they can make slight changes to their own teaching, which can substantially support the development of students’ creative potential and result in a more creative approach to teaching. The insights and practical suggestions presented in this book represent some of the newest and most promising work being done in the field of creativity studies. This book is unique in that it presents teachers with concrete ideas for how to simultaneously support creativity and learning. A particularly novel feature of this book is that it offers a blend of theoretical insights and vivid classroom examples to illustrate the kinds of opportunities and challenges that teachers face when they attempt to teach for and with creativity. As such, this book will provide teachers, scholars, researchers, and anyone interested in classroom creativity with new directions for future research and educational practice.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_8ac2c45d-5ea9-4cfa-876e-33375741f631.jpg?v=1788965528
ai-enhanced-elt-innovative-strategies-to-transform-your-classroom-9781953745552
AI-Enhanced ELT: Innovative Strategies to Transform Your Classroom
AI-Enhanced ELT: Innovative Strategies to Transform Your Classroom is the essential guide to understanding and implementing AI in language education. Research in the World Language Classroom
The current thrust in the field of education is to improve teachers’ understanding of how research on best practices can improve student learning. The field of world language education introduces a double, perhaps a triple, bind: teachers must be able to design and deliver instruction that aligns with national expectations for developing students’ language and intercultural abilities for success in the global workplace, yet in schools across America, all K-12 students do not have the opportunity to study languages, even though research supports their astonishing facility for acquisition. Schools and teachers without resources, including time to investigate and implement evidence-based best practices, are ultimately held accountable for student performance. If world language teachers are to advocate for languages, they must use their expertise and share evidence of their students’ progress. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) recently began development of a national research priorities agenda for grades preK-16. Action research, which is classroom-centered and inquiry-based, can contribute to our profession’s efforts, as it helps us to increase awareness of the critical need for language study in grades preK-16. World language teachers can become teacher-researchers in their own classrooms, gathering deeply meaningful insights into their students’ progress that they can share with others. Teacher-researchers investigate innovative approaches in response to their questions about teaching and learning, which are rooted in daily experience. They engage their students in fresh learning activities, and student feedback helps them to make better decisions about instructional and assessment strategies. Results can be shared with stakeholders, including parents, administrators, school board members, and guidance counselors, as evidence of what all kinds of students can do in languages. At a time in our history when we are striving to prepare teachers for 21st-century schools that prioritize global competence, Action Research in the World Language Classroom is a timely resource for the profession. It describes a natural, engaging, motivating way to contribute, particularly for preservice teachers who are shaping their views and understanding about world language instruction and the connections between research and best practices. The book includes four studies conducted by preservice teachers during their student teaching internships in North Carolina public schools. The editor hopes that their work and observations will inspire and assist world language educators at all stages of their careers.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_20030e3a-4295-4440-aa36-65415bcbb799.jpg?v=1788965529
classroom-justice-in-second-foreign-language-l2-education-9783032132369
Classroom Justice in Second/Foreign Language (L2) Education
This book provides a comprehensive exploration of classroom justice in L2 education. Strategies for the K-12 Social Studies Classroom
While the concept of integration or an interdisciplinary curriculum has been around for decades, the purposeful practice of integration is a relatively new educational endeavor. Though classroom teachers often say they “integrate,” there generally seems to be a lack of understanding of what this thing called integration is (theory) and what it is supposed to look like in the classroom (practice). Arguably, no other discipline has felt the pressure to integrate more than social studies. Marginalized by federal initiatives such as No Child Left Behind and suffering from a general crisis of credibility, social studies has been pushed further and further to the proverbial back burner of educational importance. Yet regardless of perspective or position, social studies remains ripe for integration. The crux of this book is to provide educators insights and strategies into how to integrate social studies with other discipline areas. Calling upon national experts in their respective fields, each chapter chronicles the broad relationship between individual content areas and social studies. Multiple examples of integrative opportunities are included. At the end of each chapter is a series of grade-specific integrative lesson plans ready for implementation. This book was purposefully designed as a how-to, hands-on, ready-reference guide for educators at all stages and all levels of teaching.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_89dc9026-27ac-4113-a190-fa56969c6958.jpg?v=1788965532
the-heart-and-craft-of-classroom-management-9781040955529
The Heart and Craft of Classroom Management
Classroom management is often framed as control—rules, consequences, and compliance. The Heart and Craft of Classroom Management offers a different, more sustainable approach: one rooted in belonging, nervous-system awareness, and intentional structure. Drawing on decades of experience as a teacher, behavior specialist, and school leader, Joseph S. McQueen reframes behavior as communication and positions relationships as the foundation of effective classroom practice. Blending research-informed insight with practical, classroom-ready strategies, this book guides educators in creating environments where students feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. Readers will explore how adult presence, tone, routines, and predictable systems shape behavior before problems escalate. The book balances the emotional labor of teaching (the heart) with concrete tools and systems (the craft) that support both student success and educator sustainability. This unique Creating a Culture for Learning in the Classroom measurement scale is versatile and can be used in a number of ways. Educators can use it for self-evaluation for their own practice, so that they can build on what they already do and improve where they need to. Leadership teams and mentors can use it to audit quality, supporting positive discussions and the setting of development targets. Finally, inspectors and researchers will find it essential to capture the quality of support and teaching for creating a culture for learning. The scale itself is informed by the evidence base of effective practice linked to improved children’s outcomes. It focuses on supporting positive, respectful relationships and building cultures for learning. It includes both the ‘how’ and ‘what’ to develop when supporting children’s self-regulation and personal, social, emotional and academic achievements. The scale is particularly useful when supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with additional learning needs, and may also resolve attendance issues. Many guidebooks and professional development materials have been produced on teacher collaboration and co-teaching for special education, inclusive classrooms. Similarly, much has been published about effective strategies teachers can use to offer more culturally and linguistically responsive instruction to their language learners. However, only a few resources are available to help general education teachers and ESL (English-as-a-second-language) specialists, or two English-as-aforeign-language (EFL) teachers (such as native and nonnative English speaking) teachers to collaborate effectively. With this volume, our goal is to offer an accessible resource, long-awaited by educators whose individual instructional practice and/or institutional paradigm shifted to a more collaborative approach to language education. Through this collection of chapters, we closely examine ESL/EFL co-teaching and other collaborative practices by (a) exploring the rationale for teacher collaboration to support ESL/EFL instruction, (b) presenting current, classroom-based, practitioner-oriented research studies and documentary accounts related to co-teaching, co-planning, co-assessing, curriculum alignment, teacher professional development, and additional collaborative practices, and (c) offering authentic teacher reflections and recommendations on collaboration and co-teaching. These three major themes are woven together throughout the entire volume, designed as a reference to both novice and experienced teachers in their endeavors to provide effective integrated, collaborative instruction for EFL or ESL learners. We also intend to help preservice and inservice ESL/EFL teachers, teacher educators, professional developers, ESL/EFL program directors, and administrators to find answers to critical questions.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_5d362484-339d-4d72-a33b-8631c7a73cd8.jpg?v=1788965532
teacher-beliefs-and-classroom-performance-9781068182365
Teacher Beliefs and Classroom Performance
This volume of Advances in Teacher Education is about beliefs held by teachers and addresses the important topic of teacher beliefs from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. L2 educators and learners play pivotal roles in facilitating this. However, this challenge requires more than mere fluency; it demands a pedagogical shift that encourages L2 learners to uncover and question hidden assumptions while seeking solutions to problems they may identify. Towards Critical Dialogue in the Language Classroom offers a timely response, viewing the L2 classroom not only as a site for language acquisition but also as a space for critique, inquiry, and analysis supported by respectful mutual engagement and dialogue in the L2. This book bridges the gap between foundational theory and classroom practice. The first part provides a deep historical and philosophical exposition of dialogue, from manifold sources, through the transformative problem-posing pedagogy of Paulo Freire to contemporary thinkers and educators. The second part translates these ideas into a documentation of classroom practice, detailing activities implemented in an actual L2 context. The book illustrates how to support L2 learners as they move towards critical dialogue. They engage with linguistic functions, use interactive tasks relating to potentially controversial themes, and uncover and question gender socialization embedded in everyday life. What sets this work apart is its combination of rigorous theoretical grounding and a lived pedagogical narrative. Documenting incremental steps of classroom practice towards critical dialogue, this book serves as encouragement for L2 educators, researchers, and curriculum designers who seek to honor student voices and prepare L2 learners to thoughtfully reshape the world around them.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_19e16cdb-c9b5-4b99-8512-ee5a2ee5d19b.jpg?v=1788965534
classroom-robotics-9781918115529
Classroom Robotics
The purpose of this book is to reach out to teachers, parents, coaches, and students who may be hoping to, or just investigating the possibility of, how to get started with robotics. Drawing from social theorists, educators, and on-the-ground activists, this book considers how a politically conscious understanding of trauma rooted in the lived experiences of oppressed and dehumanized people can trouble and reform social justice education. Moving between theory, practice, and experience, Embracing Trauma in the Classroom queries how social justice educators can move forward at a time when the world feels confused and classrooms are under attack. Trauma doesn’t get left at the door when class starts; it’s always all around us, and it unavoidably affects teaching and learning. Drawing on an ethnographic study of teachers' classroom practices in an English primary school, the author offers advice around research design, collecting and analysing data and the writing of ANT-LS accounts. In August 2000, following the Ninth International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-9) in Makuhari, Japan, MSEB and USNCMI capitalized on the presence of mathematics educators in attendance from the United States and Japan by holding a two and a half-day workshop on the professional development of mathematics teachers. This workshop used the expertise of the participants from the two countries to develop a better, more flexible, and more useful understanding of the knowledge that is needed to teach well and how to help teachers to obtain this knowledge. A major focus of the workshop was to discuss teachers' opportunities in both societies—using teaching practice as a medium for professional development. Another focus of the workshop addressed practice by considering the records of teaching, including videos of classroom lessons and cases describing teachers and their work. These proceedings reflect the activities and discussion of the workshop using both print and video to enable others to share in their experience
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_dee5e34b-9565-4f2d-9443-6370d27d0e69.jpg?v=1788965543
managing-challenging-behaviour-in-the-classroom-9781351703086
Managing Challenging Behaviour in the Classroom

For teachers and SENCOs in all settings, this invaluable resource will guide you through a simple, systematic process of understanding why challenging behaviour is happening and give you some very practical, easily implemented strategies that all staff can use to help make things easier for the young people in your group.

Key features include: a wide selection of different strategies for coping with challenging behaviour so that you can meet the needs of each individual pupil; a flexible framework with templates and tools to help you proactively plan approaches to challenging behaviour so that you and your colleagues can respond consistently and effectively; written by an experienced Educational Psychologist and based on proven strategies developed through years of practice in Special Schools as well as Primary and Secondary mainstream schools.

Unlike other books addressing challenging behaviour, this resource offers a psychologically-based framework that can easily be implemented by mainstream teachers and SENCOs. A century ago, a typical US college campus was a sanctuary of privilege, with white men of means constituting nearly the entire student population. Today, half of US undergraduates live at or near the poverty line, and universities are more diverse than ever. But teaching and curricula have not caught up, resulting in stark inequities. Black and Hispanic students graduate at lower rates than their white and Asian counterparts, economically insecure and disabled students face persistent disadvantages, and in STEM disciplines gender imbalances remain the norm. One Classroom at a Time provides practical, research-based recommendations for teachers and administrators who want to narrow such academic gaps. David Gooblar explains the psychological hardships facing many marginalized students—including stereotype threat and belonging uncertainty—and provides detailed remedies. This wide-ranging guide also offers advice for mitigating burdens of financial insecurity and designing classes that work for all students regardless of disabilities. The emphasis throughout is on helping instructors and administrators understand not just the principles of equitable pedagogy but also the reasoning; not just what works, but why it works. In the twenty-first century, college courses shouldn’t be built for imaginary students of yesteryear. One Classroom at a Time shows how we can tailor pedagogy to the students of today, so that all of them can secure the education and the success they deserve.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/4435/9966/files/1024_ac8b0de3-b433-4c4b-a8f7-5e4a24a6c57a.jpg?v=1788965544
classroom-interaction-for-language-teachers-9781942799061
Classroom Interaction for Language Teachers
In any classroom, it is through language interaction that students are able to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and understand communication.
